Italy Sees Multiple Sabotage Attempts Targeting Railway Lines

(MENAFN) Railway infrastructure across Italy suffered multiple suspected sabotage incidents Saturday, crippling intercity train services primarily in northern regions as the nation launched the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, according to media reports.

Regional news outlets reported that numerous rail corridors connecting northern urban centers were hit in what investigators believe represents a synchronized campaign of attacks. Near Bologna Station—a critical transportation nexus experiencing heavy Olympic spectator traffic—authorities discovered severed cables alongside two incendiary explosive mechanisms.

The first explosive device successfully detonated, paralyzing rail operations on the Bologna-Venice corridor and triggering delays exceeding two hours. A second mechanism designed to cripple the Bologna-Ancona route malfunctioned and never detonated, averting additional service disruptions.

An additional attack occurred in the vicinity of Pesaro, where perpetrators allegedly ignited a railway junction on the Ancona-Rimini line, escalating alarm over rail network vulnerabilities.

No organization has accepted responsibility for the coordinated strikes. The incidents' occurrence coinciding precisely with the Winter Olympics opening ceremony has generated widespread speculation regarding anarchist involvement, media sources indicated. Criminal investigations remain active.

Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini announced via social media platforms that prosecutors have launched terrorism-related investigations into the railway incidents.

In related developments, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani revealed earlier this week that authorities successfully neutralized multiple cyberattacks directed at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

In a February 4 statement, Tajani disclosed that security teams blocked a wave of cyber assaults targeting Foreign Ministry installations, Olympics-affiliated digital platforms, and hospitality establishments in Cortina d'Ampezzo, attributing the digital offensive to Russian sources.
