Italy Urges Halt to Escalation in Lebanon

(MENAFN) On Thursday, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani renewed his appeal for Israel to stop intensifying military operations in Lebanon.

During a phone conversation with Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi, Tajani expressed support for a ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, while emphasizing his readiness to assist in reinforcing state institutions and the official armed forces.

"To defend the ceasefire, Hezbollah must absolutely cease any military action against Israel and accept the decisions of the legitimate government. We are convinced that Israel too must renounce military escalation. The path of diplomacy is the only way to achieve peace," Tajani stated on the US social media platform X.

Despite the renewed ceasefire, Lebanese media reported that three individuals were killed and eight others wounded on Thursday following Israeli airstrikes in eastern and southern Lebanon.

These strikes occurred just one day after Lebanon and Israel agreed to extend their fragile truce and establish “pilot zones,” granting the Lebanese army sole territorial authority while excluding all non-state groups.

The arrangement was unveiled in a joint declaration after the fourth round of US-mediated negotiations at the State Department on Wednesday.
