The American University of Rome and Università degli Studi di Palermo: Undisciplined Anthropologies II: Beyond Borders

International conference brings scholars, artists, and researchers to Rome for two days of interdisciplinary debate, 25-26 September, 2026.

ROME, ROME, ITALY, September 21, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- The American University of Rome (AUR) and the Department of Cultures and Societies at Università degli Studi di Palermo (UniPa) will come together on 25–26 September, 2026 to present 'Undisciplined Anthropologies II: Beyond Borders,' an international conference exploring new approaches to anthropology, knowledge, and interdisciplinary inquiry.

Hosted at AUR’s campus in Monteverde, the conference is open to the public, with free registration, offering students, academics, and members of the wider community an opportunity to engage with scholars and practitioners from universities and institutions across Europe and beyond.

Building on the first edition of Undisciplined Anthropologies, the conference asks what becomes possible when traditional disciplinary boundaries are questioned. Its central theme, Beyond Borders, considers how anthropology can intersect with the arts, technology, ecology, politics, and other forms of knowledge to create new ways of understanding contemporary societies and imagining possible futures.

Across four sessions and two days, presentations will range widely - from multispecies memory, migration, artistic practice, and cultural identity to post-humanism, algorithmic judgment, and the relationship between anthropology and emerging technologies. The program reflects the conference's deliberately expansive nature, bringing different methodologies, disciplines, and cultural perspectives into conversation.

The conference also reflects an ongoing academic partnership between AUR and UniPa, combining the international networks and intellectual communities of both institutions. AUR President Scott Sprenger and UniPa scholar Stefano Montes are among the conference organizers, alongside anthropologist Massimo Canevacci, and all three will open and close the two-day program.

By bringing together scholars, artists, writers, and researchers across institutional and disciplinary boundaries, Undisciplined Anthropologies II embodies the spirit of collaboration itself: creating spaces where different traditions of scholarship can meet, challenge one another, and generate new perspectives.
